A few people have questioned our sanity that's for sure. However, during covid, we used to have "fencies" with our neighbor - beers over the fence, in other words. That act (along with many previous home brewing endeavors) spawned the idea to start a brewery. Instead of socializing over the fence, why not socialize around the Mashtun? Oohhh yes, lets call it Mashtun Social (that's the taproom), and then of course,
MASHTUN® Brewing, which is the actual brewery part. Done deal.
So we bought the smallest (but mightiest) commercial brewing system that we could afford, rented a storage shed and Bobs Your Uncle!
In New Zealand, there's a big fat bird called a Kereru. Its a huge wood pigeon, colored green, purple, gray and white. One of its favorite things to do is eat fermented Karaka berries, which gets them horrendously drunk. They then proceed to fall out of trees, fly through windows or generally just stumble around in a stupor until the booze wears off, then they go do it again. We kind of like that bird, so decided to make it our mascot. You can check out a short (and quite funny) video of it here:
All kinds. Because we have such a small system it allows us to experiment. So you can expect to see a whole variety of different brews, and as we grow and expand we hope to make some of those brews regulars on tap, and also in stores in the future.
